Selenium
Selenomethionine — 100 mcg
What it does
Selenomethionine is the organic form of selenium, incorporated directly into body proteins for sustained release. Selenium is essential for thyroid hormone conversion (T4 to active T3) and glutathione peroxidase — your body's master antioxidant enzyme. Australian and New Zealand soils are often selenium-poor, making dietary intake unreliable.
Key benefits
- Thyroid hormone activation
- Antioxidant defence
- Immune function
- DNA protection
The evidence
Strong evidence for thyroid function support, particularly in selenium-poor regions (Australia/NZ). SU.VI.MAX trial showed reduced cancer risk in men with adequate selenium. Narrow therapeutic window makes quality dosing critical.
Important
Do NOT exceed 400 mcg/day — selenium has a narrow safety margin. Symptoms of excess include garlic breath, hair loss, and nail brittleness. 100 mcg is well within safe range.
